Introduction

This multi-media project is going to be based on the local rock-climbing community, and destinations in and around Kamloops B.C. As an avid climber myself this is something I have noticed lacking in destinations for all information, such as reviews of climbs, trail maps, and local indoor climbing and shopping opportunities you need to go to different resources. Through my website I hope to be the most convenient resource for guidance on the Kamloops region by giving brief descriptions and outlines of various areas and if possible, maps and guidebooks. I also what to feature stories and advice from the local leaders of the climbing community, by speaking directly with these people and telling stories and posting content people can relate to I hope to build a strong and consistent online presence. I will not be able to post full guidebooks, if there are any, as they will be copyrighted however, I can give descriptions and grades of the climbs, as well as my own pictures.

Rational

This topic is important to readers not only because of the convenience, but because of the insights I will be able to give on the various crags as well. My main goal is to be able to be a resource for newcomers and veterans alike, by giving overviews of various areas and the city for newcomers and deeper insight into established areas and community members for veterans. Traveling to new places for any reason can be a daunting task as you don’t know the area or the people, through my website I will be able to communicate the ideals of our community to anyone wishing to visit or stay. It can be irritating to have to bounce around to several different websites to find the information you are looking for, on this website people will be able to find all the necessary information to enjoy Kamloops to the fullest.

Text Story

For my informative text story, and photos, I will outline the various crags in Kamloops and attach pictures of each one. I believe this story will best suit the media because it does not have a lot of emotion to convey, like a video or audio story might. This format will also give me the opportunity to give a detailed description on each area and have a reference for people to look at. Because I am talking about a specific destination and its features, I feel like its necessary to see that destination, especially if I am giving directions or comments on the parts of routes.

Audio Interview

My audio interview is going to be with the manager of Cliffside Climbing, Kamloops local climbing gym. Cliffside has been open for many years and serving Kamloops through there recreation space, competitive teams, and instruction. I think audio would be the best option for this interview because it will be able to convey the passion we both have for this sport, and also seem more personal. Audio gives us the opportunity to get to know people and get to know them on a deeper level, and because this story is about his business and customers over the years there is no need for any visual, besides maybe and introductory photograph of the gym currently.

Investigative Video               For my investigative video I will be looking at the impacts rock-climbing has on the Kamloops environment, as well as the opinions of Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc. I generally feel like this topic is overlooked when it comes to outdoor sports, rock climbing specifically. Rock and other natural formations tend to hold some sort of significance to various indigenous peoples, and as most outdoor enthusiasts in Canada are white, their significance can be very easily overlooked. I think this media best suits the story because it will give the subjects of the video a clear identity in the eyes of the viewer and carry the emotion across in a way audio or text couldn’t. Through editing I will be able to get my main points across in a shorter amount of time and create and engaging video from start to finish.
